Generative Engine Optimization: How to Get Cited by AI Assistants
Updated 13 September 2026
Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants and AI Overviews quote it when answering a question. It overlaps heavily with good SEO, but it optimises for being extracted and cited rather than for being clicked.
The mechanics: assistants retrieve a handful of sources, extract the passages that most directly answer the query, and attribute them. So the unit of optimisation is the passage, not the page.
How an assistant picks a source
- 01It interprets the question and often rewrites it into several sub-queries.
- 02It retrieves candidate pages, usually from a search index it trusts.
- 03It extracts passages that answer the sub-queries directly and unambiguously.
- 04It synthesises an answer and cites the sources it leaned on.
Every step rewards the same thing: a clearly written, self-contained passage that answers one question without requiring the rest of the page.
Write answer-first
Put the direct answer in the first two sentences under the heading, then explain. This is the opposite of the narrative build-up that makes for good essays, and it is the single biggest change most sites need to make.
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| Many marketers wonder about the best time to post... | For B2B audiences, Tuesday to Thursday, 8 to 11am in the audience's time zone, is the reliable default. |
| In this article we will explore SSI... | The LinkedIn SSI is a 0 to 100 score built from four pillars worth 25 points each. |
Structure that extracts cleanly
- One question per H2, phrased the way a person would ask it.
- Short paragraphs, one claim each. Long paragraphs get truncated mid-argument.
- Tables for comparisons and specifications, they are extracted almost verbatim.
- Numbered steps for procedures.
- An FAQ block for the near-miss variants of the main question.
Signals that make you a trusted source
- 01Named authors with verifiable credentials and a real profile to link to.
- 02Dates, updated as the content is maintained.
- 03Specifics: numbers, limits, named features. Vague content cannot be quoted.
- 04Consistency of facts across your own pages and your LinkedIn presence.
- 05Schema markup: Article, Person, Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList.
How to check whether it is working
Ask the assistants directly. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews with the exact questions your pages answer, and note who gets cited. Repeat monthly. It is crude, and it is currently the most honest measurement available.
Frequently asked questions
- Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?
- It is a layer on top. Technical SEO gets you indexed and retrieved; GEO decides whether your passage is the one quoted. Answer-first writing, structure and schema are the difference.
- Does schema markup help with AI citations?
- It helps machines resolve what your page is about and who wrote it, which supports retrieval and attribution. It is not a guaranteed ticket into an answer.
- How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
- Typically weeks after a page is indexed, and it fluctuates. Assistants re-retrieve constantly, so citations come and go far more than classic rankings do.
