Answer Engine Optimization Techniques That Actually Move Citations
Updated 13 September 2026
Answer engine optimization means writing pages so a machine can lift a correct, complete answer straight out of them. The techniques are concrete: question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first two sentences, tables for structured facts, FAQ blocks for variants, and schema that labels all of it.
Here is each one, with what good looks like.
1. Question-shaped headings
Match the heading to the query. How to customize your LinkedIn URL outperforms URL customisation, because retrieval matches phrasing.
One question per heading. Compound headings produce compound, unusable passages.
2. The two-sentence answer
Under every question heading, answer it in the first two sentences with no preamble, then support it. Assume the reader only sees those two sentences, because in an AI answer, that is often literally true.
3. Structured facts
- Tables for limits, sizes, prices, comparisons.
- Numbered lists for procedures, in the actual order.
- Bold-free plain sentences for definitions, so extraction is clean.
4. Schema markup
| Schema type | Use on | What it clarifies |
|---|---|---|
| Article | Guides and posts | Author, date, headline, topic |
| Person | About and author pages | Who the person is, and their links |
| Organization | Site-wide | The business entity and its profiles |
| FAQPage | Pages with a real FAQ | Question and answer pairs |
| BreadcrumbList | Nested pages | Where the page sits in the site |
Schema does not create authority. It removes ambiguity, which is a prerequisite for being cited confidently.
5. Freshness and maintenance
Assistants prefer sources that look maintained, especially for anything with a year in the query. Put a visible updated date on the page, keep it honest, and revisit dated pages at least twice a year.
6. Internal linking that describes the destination
Link with the words the destination is about. Read the LinkedIn algorithm guide is a better link than click here, because the anchor text is itself a signal about what the target page answers.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
- SEO optimises for a ranked list of links. AEO optimises for being the passage inside a generated answer. The overlap is large, the difference is answer-first structure and explicit markup.
- Does FAQ schema still do anything?
- Google reduced FAQ rich results in search, but the markup still helps machines parse question and answer pairs, which matters for generated answers. Keep it where the FAQ is genuine.
- How long should an AEO-optimised page be?
- As long as it takes to answer the question completely and no longer. Precision beats word count for extraction.
